Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is the liquid fraction of autologous peripheral blood, treated in such a way as to reach a platelet concentration higher than the base one. (1) PRP therapies have been used for more than 20 years in the field of regenerative medicine, with various fields of application in both human and veterinary medicine.


The starting sample for obtaining the PRP is peripheral blood, therefore a simple venous blood sampling will subsequently be subjected to a process, known as differential centrifugation, in which the acceleration force separates the different cellular components of the blood based on their different specific gravity.

PRP and platelet concentrates

Platelets are cells normally involved in the haemostasis process. They have in their structure, different granules,  which containing growth factors (GF), intercellular signalling molecules, cytokines, integrins, coagulation proteins, adhesion molecules and other peptides, which play an important role in tissue healing and repair processes, promoting the recall of immune cells, the formation of new vascular connections.

The applications of Platelet Concentrates range from maxillofacial surgery (2), to wound healing and dermatology (3), repair of severe bone loss, (4), eye surgery (5), etc.

The substances mainly involved in these processes are:

Platelet Derived GF (PDGF)

Insulin-like GF (IGF1)

Transforming GF-beta 1 (TGF-β1)

Vascular endothelial GF (VEGF)

Basic fibroblast GF (bFGF)

Epidermal GF (EGF)


Treatment opportunities

Platelet derivatives represent a promising therapeutic modality, offering opportunities for the treatment of wounds, ulcers, soft tissue injuries and various other applications in cell therapy within tissue engineering, alone or in combination with cell therapies such as mesenchymal stem cells.

Limited risks

The PRP is an autologous product ( taken and implanted in the same animal) does not present risks of rejection and side effects. Preparation in the laboratory ensures that a product free of contaminants is obtained; the different application possibilities ranging from problems with the musculoskeletal system to skin and eye problems make it a useful product of regenerative medicine.
